Christian's Cake Smash

August 16, 2020

He’s grown so much hasn’t he? He babbles and walks, he points at things he wants and he’s managed to grow more hair on that precious tiny head of his. He can even tell you he is ONE. With his little finger of course. Let me remind you guys that when I met Christian back in December 2019 he was only three months old. Basically brand new to this world. And look at him now, all ready to conquer said world one smile at a time.

When his parents contacted me about wanting to document such an important milestone I instantly knew the place that I wanted to have the photoshoot at. It is one of my favorite places to bring my little boy for impromptu sessions because of many reasons, but the main one is that wooden door. There is just something so mysterious, rustic and fairytale-like about it that keeps inspiring me. Don’t you want to know where it leads to when it opens? What or who is behind it? Maybe one day I’ll peak through it, maybe not. I’d like to keep the mystery and intrigue alive. Fun.

You wouldn’t believe it but that day a strong and dangerous storm came out of nowhere. It was around 105°F all day long and right when we arrived on location these enormous dark clouds blocked the sun, the wind picked up to, I don’t know, 20mph (not so sure, but think The Wizard of Oz wind…) and I thought there goes the outdoor photos. Boy was I wrong. Not only did the photos come out perfect in my opinion, but those dark clouds provided shelter from the sun and harsh lighting. Christian must’ve been thrilled he was able to model those cute, trendy blue overalls and adorable baby feet. When we decided it was probably safest to wrap it up and head back to a safe place, the storm had picked up its pace and the strong wind took a giant tree branch down. As we walked by it. Right behind us. (told ya, straight out of the Wizard of Oz). Where’s a camera when ya need it, amiright???

This all sounds like an unusual way to capture a baby, a teddy bear and some cake but that storm wasn’t part of the set-up. The botanical, almost woodland vibe was. This idea of a set-up is all credited to Christian’s parents. They wanted something minimal and clean, and a simple greenery décor always delivers. I just went out and gathered all I thought was needed and voilà, we got ourselves a happy baby sitting in a nourishing, sweet scented, organic coconut milk bath. No regrets here.

Cake smash sessions are always hard work. It takes a lot of planning and energy to have everything setup perfectly. But when you have a baby that is so chill, happy and cooperative as Christian was it is so enjoyable and so very worth it.

But I don’t have to sell you on this, I mean, just take a look at the gallery and you will not think otherwise.

Oh, and by the way, every boy needs a pair of blue overalls, spread the word. Quick!

Happy birthday little one, From Kika K.
